Welcome to the sixth post in a weekly series on new Canadian music ! This week it is ‘melodramatic’ rock with a review of Bend Sinister’s new album ‘Small Fame’. Bend Sinister is a band originally from Kelowna. So what is it with Kelowna ? Sometimes it seems to me that all bands originate from Ogopogoland ? Maybe I am the only one thinking this since I have a special place in my heart for K-towner’s…
Anyways, Bend Sinister is a four-piece old school rock band. Dan Moxon’s high pitched vocals and Fender Rhodes piano playing (although Dan plays a Nord Electro 3) give Bend Sinister their own distinct sound. Twirling and twisting the eighties sing-along tunes of Supertramp and Queen into the twenty-first century. Their music varies, it makes you want to dance and sing with a big smile on your face at one point, and then later it encourages a little healthy cry. Listen to the full album stream on Exclaim!.
Wanna watch instead of just listen ? Check out Bend Sinister’s just released official video of ‘Don’t You Know’.
A little fact – I keep on tripping in Vancouver. I know, I know I have to watch where I walk but that is so hard to do cause there is so many new things to see. This time I tripped into a playground, the playground.is an initiative by music minded Vanlocals to co-create videos for bands. And yes, they recently did this for the song called ‘Road Divided’, a bonus track on the new album ‘Small Fame’. We dig playground.is! Next time the fuzzgang wants to come out and play too !
Looking for some older tracks ? Try this official video dating back to 2007 of ‘Time Breaks Down’ – this one is a classic for the living room dancing sing along (as you will be participating from the living room in the alley dance off scene) !
Rather go new skool ? Here is a video of ‘She Don’t Give It Up’ live from the Khatsahlano! 2012 festival.
…and another from Khatsahlano! 2012 ‘Got You On My Mind’.
… Watch this space for next weeks’ update !
