Welcome to the twelfth post in a weekly series on new Canadian music! This week it is creative dreamy artsy jazzy folk pop with a review of Brasstronaut’s sophomore album ‘Mean Sun’.
Brasstronaut is a six-piece musical ensemble from Vancouver. After listening to ‘Mean Sun’ I can summarize it in three witty points. First off is the dreamy pace of the songs due to the well crafted musical arrangements. Second is Edo van Breemen’s (there must be some Dutch roots) silky smooth story telling voice. Last, but certainly not least, the creative sound produced by the swaying trumpet, clarinet and electronic wind instrument. Well, I guess that is a bit like my first point ?! Anyways, my top picks are the songs ‘Bounce’, ‘Mean Sun’ and ‘The Grove’.
Listen to the full album stream of ‘Mean Sun’ on CBC Music. If you like ‘Mean Sun’ you should also have a listen to Brasstronaut’s 2010 debut album ‘Mount Chimaera’.
For your viewing pleasure is the video of ‘Mean Sun’ performed live at the Vancouver CBC Musical Nooners series earlier this summer.
