Why would one bike into town at 10pm and in minus 5 weather? Well, to see Friends. It was cold but the chill was long forgotten after we entered the Paradiso, caught a few songs of the D’Angelo show, and then headed upstairs to the other room where Friends would be playing. The room was much fuller than what I was expecting and it was full of hipsters. Fuzzbabe really has to get herself some new duds …
Getting back to the music, I had watched the few Youtube clips in advance and thought to myself, they sound funky. Upon taking the stage I had a short moment of ‘is that Hillary Duff?’. Then I remembered that Hillary Duff is pregnant and in LA so lose the Disney thoughts. Getting back to the band, standard formula of 3 boys and 2 pretty chicks. If you want to read a quirky story as to how they became friends click here. What I enjoyed about their performance was watching them switch around the instruments and having so much fun. It was the second show of their first European tour and you could tell they were stoked about it. Friends have a ‘slightly’ nineties pop sound, tunes that stick and songs with a tear or a big smile !
As the show came to an end I thought to myself, I like it, lets buy a CD! But that is when I learned they only have t-shirts… long live merchandising. So what does a band do when they do not yet have enough songs for a CD? (it will be released soon very soon we think). They fill their stage time with their own songs plus a few covers of their fav songs. While there are some purists that feel all covers are evil, I am OK with it so long as they are done well. The Fuzzbabe top 3 picks are (and let me know what you think of the cover of ??? ;-)
