Concert review of Fucked Up at the Fortune Sound Club, Vancouver, September 15th 2012.
Isn’t always funny how those nights when you expect the least you end of having the most fun. Saturday night the Indiefuzz Canadian connection were at Fortune Sound Club to catch the Fucked Up show. It was, to say the least, quite fucked up and offered more than one laugh and smile as a great time was had by all.
Upon making our way through the streets of Chinatown we arrived at the venue. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of attending a show at the Fortune we highly recommend it. The place it just big enough to hold a good crowd without being too big – it is like a narrower version of the Melkweg (Oude Zaal). The floor is wood, the walls are brick, the lights have a red and relaxed tint to them, the bar is long, the beer is cold, and the sound system is rock’n.
Next to the venue qualities the crowd was pumped and ready for a show. But first things first….local up and coming punkster White Lung had the opportunity to warm up the crowd. Those of you whom frequent the Indiefuzz site know that White Lung is no stranger to us but a new local find that we look forward to hearing more from. Check out the video playlist we have of White Lung after catching her show at the Biltmore earlier this summer. White Lung’s front lady Mish Way rocked the stage and the crowd warmed up their moshing legs and the party seemed to have got started.
After a short punchy set it was on to the main show and energy filled the air as the crowd anticipation grew. Quietly taking the stage were the band members of Fuck Up. Some might say it looked slightly like they had just come from the surburban mall as they were not dressed to a punk stereotype. Moments later, bursting onto the stage was the man, the myth, the soon to be punk legend. Damian Abraham is more than a lead singer, he is performer who takes the stage and sings (yells) with every piece of his heart. The result, an amazing experience. The band played quick, fast, and furious with three guitars while Mr. Abraham screamed his lyrics into the mic or let his audience do it for him. He was on stage, standing on the bar, standing in the middle of the crowd, he was everywhere. The fuzzbabe had never heard of Fucked Up before (lame excuse being that I was twelve years away from Canadian soil) but left the concert thinking I had found a new friend. A band that plays with their heart and has so much fun doing it – such an experience how can you not walk away a fan!?
In true fuzzbabe style – here are in order – my top three picks of the night!
Bringing in number one is ‘Turn the Season’.
…and because I can relate to the lyrics, number two ‘I Hate Summer’.
…and last, but certainly not least, the classic ‘Generation’.
