Welcome to the ninth post in a weekly series on new Canadian music ! This week it is artsy pop rock with a review of Hot Panda’s third and new album ‘Go Outside’.
I don’t know what it is with me and my search … every morning I open my window and I get this fresh Pacific breeze of new Canadian music in my face. Maybe it is because the CBC studio is in eyes site, or maybe its the Hastings Street vibe with its hotel pub heaven being the music magnet. All the artists and bands seem to come to the city, the Rockies and wide Prairies apparently aren’t an obstacle. I will admit that it is also me just taking the easy pickings. There will come a moment in which I will start to dig deeper. I will have to use a pair of binoculars, or better yet, meet new people who tell me about their latest and greatest findings.
So on with the music talk. Hot Panda is a four piece band from Vancouver. They started off back in 2006 way over in Edmontonian land. Their new album ‘Go Outside’, released on Mint Records, has a mix of uptight and slower artsy pop rock songs. Some songs with trumpet and always with the restless vocals of Chris Connelly. Upbeat ‘See You All Around’ with the organ and the synth hand clap is my personal favourite.
Listen to the full album stream of ‘Go Outside’ on Vice. Take a listen to the song ‘Language’, it is currently climbing the CBC R3-30 countdown list as it is a catchy little tune.
Watch the video of crescendo ‘Future Markets’ being the first single of ‘Go Outside’.
