Purity Ring Live At The Venue

Concert review of Purity Ring with special guests Evian Christ & Headaches live at the Venue, Vancouver on September 7th.

Due to Purity Ring being hyped up all over the place the powers that be decided to swap venues. Yes it happens too over here in Vanvillage. The original plan was Wild Nothing in the Biltmore and Purity Ring at the Venue. The swap was much appreciated by the Indiefuzz gang as we have already been to the Biltmore and the Venue is also a shorter commute. Felt like destiny as all the pieces fell into place.

The Venue is located on Granville Street with other great venues like the Commodore Ballroom (where we saw Laura Marling) and the yet to be visited Vogue and Orpheum. On the inside the Venue is a nicely renovated swanky (night) club with a high stage, high ceiling, booths on the side as well as in the back middle of the room (yeah, we thought that was kinda weird) and a second ring upstairs. No rough edges in sight, everything was slick and shiny for the party youngsters who would be replacing us concert people promptly at 10 PM.

Before Purity Ring hit the stage we were treated to the special guests of Evian Christ and Headaches. While all three artists create big dub beats in their own way they all have something special to call their own.

First up was bearded Headaches. Currently based in the Big Apple, Edmontonian artist Landon Speers’ music moniker is Headaches. Beside musician Landon is a photographer, taking and creating, see his work on his website landonspeers.com. His music combines best with cinematic visuals although his live show was with way more head nodding bass beats. Check out ‘Oh Honey b/w Genie’.

Second up was Joshua Leary who goes under the moniker of Evian Christ. The 23-year-old beat master signed early 2012 with Tri-Angle Records based on his Youtube vid’s. Yes it DOES happen. Big UK dancy dub beats … a raw diamond who is likely to have some rap on top of the beats in the near future. Watch ‘Fuck It (None Of Ya’ll Don’t Rap)’ one of the original video’s. This dude rocks!

And last but certainly not least were the headliner Purity Ring. They released their debut album ‘Shrines’ at the end of July and are ramping up to touring mode. The gloomy Purity Ring beats are created six thousand k’s away from Vancouver. To be more accurate in Halifax/Montreal were Edmontonians (oh no, not again ;-) Corin Roddick and Megan James now are based. It is the combination of the drum and bass beats and synth hooks created by Corin and Megan’s layered lingering vocals that create this fine future electro dance pop. You probably already have had a listen but if not here is the full album stream of ‘Shrines’ on Exlaim!

To catch a glimpse of the concert we have some videos for your viewing pleasure. Unfortunately the camera does not do justice to the cool lights they had set up…watch the little ones flickering away as Corin provides the beats. First up is the video of Purity Ring’s first single ‘Obedear’ live at the Venue, Vancouver.

If you are liking it try the video for ‘Saltkin’. For a good giggle listen to the loud Friday night weekly wrap up social talk at the start.

And you made it this far and can not get enough watch the official ‘Fineshrine’ video.
